Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse’s lacrosse teams had a combined eight players receive preseason All-American honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine on Wednesday.

The women’s team, which made it to the semifinals in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, had three selections to the three teams. The men’s team had two, along with three players who received honorable mentions.

Women’s goalkeeper Delaney Sweitzer was named to the first team following a breakout season in 2023. She was top 10 nationally for ground balls per game (No. 3), saves (No. 7) and save percentage (No. 8). Sweitzer was also No. 12 in goals-against average.

The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association named Sweitzer its 2023 Goalkeeper of the Year. She was a first team All-American selection by the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse Magazine and USA Lacrosse Magazine.

Attack Emma Ward and midfielder Emma Tyrell are both on the second team.

Ward’s career-best 56 assists in 2023 was good for third in the country. She scored a career-high 94 points with five points or more in nine of the season’s games. She was also a first team All-American by IWLCA as well as All-ACC first team and ACC All-Tournament Team.

Tyrell also had a career high for points (68), fueled by a career-high 52 goals. She had a career-best seven goals against Johns Hopkins in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tyrell was a third team All-American pick by USA Lacrosse Magazine and an honorable mention by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.

On the men’s side, midfielder Jake Stevens, who transferred from Princeton this offseason, made the second team.

Stevens appeared in 50 games at Princeton and had 58 goals and 11 assists during his five seasons with the Tigers. He also had 179 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers.

Stevens was a third team All-America pick by USA Lacrosse Magazine and an Ivy League All-Tournament selection in 2023.

Joey Spallina, the 2023 ACC Rookie of the Year, was a second team preseason pick. As a true freshman, he scored 68 points, the third-most by a freshman in SU history. He led Division I freshmen in points.
