Syracuse, N.Y. — The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that scammers are calling and pretending to be deputies.

Recently the office has received reports of calls where someone pretends they’re a deputy and demands money, said Tom Newton, a spokesperson for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Often the caller, who is live or automated, says there is a warrant out and money needs to be paid, Newton said.

The sheriff’s office will never call you for money, Newton said.
