Both California and Texas Tech had to rally late in the season to become bowl eligible this year. The Golden Bears (6-6) won their last three games of the season in a row, including a dominant 33-7 win over UCLA on November 25. Texas Tech (6-6) also won its first three games in November before getting dismantled 57-7 by College Football Playoff-bound Texas Longhorns on Black Friday.
Texas Tech defeated Cal 45-31 in the only previous meeting between these teams at the 2004 Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Cal will be making its first Independence Bowl appearance and 25th bowl showing overall, while Texas Tech is playing its third Independence bowl and 41st postseason bowl.
All eyes will be on running backs at the opposite sides of the field. Cal’s Jaydn Ott holds a Pac-12-best 1,260 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, while Texas Tech’s Tahj Brooks is fourth nationally with 1,443 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
