Car fire inside parking garage in Armory Square quickly contained, fire official says

Syracuse, N.Y. -- One vehicle caught fire in the basement of a city parking garage in Armory Square this morning, but the fire was minor and appeared to be contained to one vehicle, according to a fire official.

The car fire was at the Clinton Street Garage was reported at 9:53 a.m. There were no injuries to anyone or to the building, according to District Chief Matthew Craner.

As of about 10:30 a.m., firefighters were clearing the garage of smoke. The fire department always deploys large response when a vehicle is burning inside a building, Craner said.

The cause is under investigation, officials said.

Developers are proposing to build 88 market-rate apartments in the 280-car parking garage at 401 S. Clinton St. The $18 million project that would be the first new building in Armory Square in 10 years.

Partnership Properties, JF Real Estate and the real estate finance firm Larew, Doyle & Associates have proposed demolishing the garage to make way for a new, six-story building.
