Marcellus sophomore Cece Powell has spent the last few seasons growing her reputation as one of the most competitive girls basketball players in Section III.
In Friday’s 59-38 victory over Phoenix, the reigning All-Central New York girls basketball player of the year checked another box on her impressive resume with a 29-point performance that increased her career points total to 1,000.
“Cece is a competitor no matter what situation you put her in, and if you give her a goal, she’s going to try to accomplish that goal,” Marcellus coach Delaney Martin said. “And tonight, obviously her goal was to reach 1,000 points. She was putting a lot of pressure on herself, but she’s the type of high-end athlete who will perform under any type of pressure or situation.”
Powell scored her milestone basket off an assist from Tenly Baker with about 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Baker finished with 15 points and senior Gabby Voss had six.
“I was pretty stressed about it, but my teammates really calmed me down,” Powell said. “In the second half, they were really trying to get me the ball, and you could tell they really had my back for this accomplishment. I give credit to Tenly because she gave up her easy points and gave (the ball) to me for my accomplishment, and I’m so grateful to her for that.”
After she scored, the packed Marcellus gym erupted in celebration and screaming fans began shooting off confetti cannons. Powell was mobbed by her celebrating teammates and presented with a banner for her accomplishment.
“A lot of people knew coming into the game that Cece was within reach of 1,000 points,” Martin said. “So the anticipation was there and she got it right at the very end. In a sense, it was stressful for obviously Cece and the coaching staff, but it was also a nice way to kind of end the game on a positive team note. We won, but then also ended on Cece’s great accomplishment too.”
Martin said there is no limit to how far Powell can go, but her next goal is winning a title for her Marcellus team. Last year, the Mustangs fell in the Class B sectional semifinals to Cortland.
“I think the next thing I want to accomplish ... I just want to keep winning with my team,” Powell said. “I think it’d be surreal to get a sectional championship and that’s something that I think we’re all striving for in the recent years. Obviously, the points, they’ll come as long as we keep winning. I’m just really grateful that I have a team that both wants to win and wants to help us achieve our goals.”
On Friday, Phoenix was led by senior Sara Ruetsch who finished with 13 points. The Firebirds (10-4) next travel to Jordan-Elbridge for a 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday.
Marcellus (11-3) travels to Cazenovia for a 7 p.m. game next Friday.
“This is a great group of girls,” Martin said. “They’re also hardworking. They listen and they build each other up and our team saying this year has been taking it one game at a time. It’s not a time to relax. It’s not a time to feel comfortable. We need to keep pushing ourselves to see where we can go.”
