Starting next week, the stretch of Interstate 81 north from Interstate 481 to East Glen Avenue in Syracuse will be reduced to one lane for construction, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.
The lane is expected to be closed for one year to make way for construction of a new bridge south of East Glen Avenue.
The work is expected to start at 9 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting.
At the same time, the new Exit 16A will open to traffic. This will provide a two-lane connection from I-81 north to I-481 north.
The work is part of the $2.25 billion project to remove the elevated highway in downtown Syracuse. The project has started along the I-481 corridor around the city. Eventually, I-481 will be renamed I-81 and high-speed traffic will be encouraged to use that route.
