The RedHawks (11-2) enter as the Mid-American Conference champions after beating the Toledo Rockets 23-14 on December 2. The Mountaineers (8-5) failed to capture the Sun Belt title when they lost 49-23 to Troy in the championship game, and will look for redemption at the Cure Bowl. This will be the first meeting between these two teams.
Miami brings an impressive defensive record into its Cure Bowl matchup. The Redhawks rank first in scoring (10.8), total defense (272.5) and sacks (27). Miami was second in rush defense (114.4) and pass defense (158.1) in conference play. In their last five and a half games, Miami has allowed just six touchdowns and 55 total points.
Before losing their title game, the Mountaineers were on a five-game winning streak, with quarterback Joey Aguilar throwing for a school-record 3,546 yards this season and a program-record 33 touchdowns through the air.
