SU to convert a $69M apartment complex to a student dorm. What does that mean for taxes? Syracuse University plans to convert a luxury high-rise apartment building it owns near campus into a dorm for second-year students. The change at 727 S. Crouse Ave. (top left in photo), formerly known as The Marshall, continues SU’s effort to create more student housing units on or near its main campus, in part by relocating them from the South Campus area. It also raises questions about property taxes. (N. Scott Trimble photo)

A look at Democratic plans to win control of House: The path goes through Syracuse: Democrats trying to win control of the House in next year’s election plan to make an unprecedented investment in New York state, where the party wants to flip six Republican seats from Long Island to Syracuse. Four new Democratic-aligned groups have formed to target Rep. Brandon Williams in Central New York and his fellow first-term Republicans across the state. Voters in those districts can expect to see more TV ads, phone calls, text messages, digital ads, billboards and mailers touting candidates than in previous years, and more campaign volunteers showing up at their doorsteps.

The state Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s ruling that found the district boundaries used in the 2022 election were only meant to be temporary, not left in place for a decade. The court’s 4-3 decision is a victory for Democrats.

A 3-hour online apartment lottery: Another sign of Syracuse’s housing crisis: For more than three hours, Jennifer St. Mark sat in front of a camera on Facebook Live and read aloud the names of people hoping to land an affordable apartment in Syracuse. Most of the people seeking apartments in the newly renovated Moyer Carriage Lofts, where St. Mark is in charge of leasing, will be disappointed. In Syracuse’s desolate housing market, only a lucky few can win a lottery like the one held Monday.
