Syracuse, N.Y. — A 59-year-old woman was killed early Saturday when the vehicle she was in was struck by another car driven by a drunk driver, police said.

The drunk driver went through a red light and her vehicle crashed into the other car at about 2:21 a.m. at North Salina and Catawba streets, said Lt. Matthew Malinowski, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Police Department.

The woman killed was a passenger in the vehicle struck by the drunk driver, Malinowski said.

The woman was in a car driven by a 47-year-old man who was going north on North Salina Street, he said.

His vehicle was struck by a car driven by Takisha Hordge, 25, who was driving east on Catawba Street and went through the redlight, he said.

All three drivers were transported to hospitals.

The 59-year-old woman died at a hospital. Police did not release her name at this time.

The other two people are expected to live, Malinowski said.

Hordge was arrested and charged with

  • Second-degree manslaughter
  • Second-degree vehicular manslaughter
  • Second-degree assault
  • Driving while intoxicated
  • First-degree aggravated unlicensed operation
  • Reckless driving

On Saturday morning, Hordge remained at Upstate University Hospital, Malinowski said. She will be taken to the Justice Center jail after she is discharged, he said.

In August 2020, Hordge was arrested following a fight in Syracuse where a 16-year-old was shot in the leg and two other people were injured. In March 2021, she pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and was sentenced to time she had already served in jail awaiting trial.
