Syracuse, N.Y. — A federal judge on Tuesday denied an appeal to get out of jail from a Cornell University student accused of making threats of violence against Jewish students.

Brenda Sannes, the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, upheld the decision made last month by another judge to detain Patrick Dai.

Sannes wrote in a 20-page opinion that a detention hearing held Nov. 9 was authorized, as well as that the government proved Dai poses both a risk of not appearing in court and a danger to the community, rejecting arguments made in court papers earlier this month by public defender Lisa Peebles.
