Clayton, N.Y. — An Onondaga County man was found dead Sunday morning after his truck plunged into the St. Lawrence River, officials said.
The man who died is Jeremy T. Hubbard, 49, of Jordan, said Sgt. Paige Taylor, a spokesperson for Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies determined the 2019 Ford F-150 pickup truck went through the ice around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Taylor said in a news release.
Hubbard drove off the end of Rivershore Drive in the village of Clayton, she said. The pickup became mostly submerged when it went through thinner ice out in the bay.
Emergency crews responded around 8 a.m. Sunday after a report of a vehicle partially submerged on the ice. An initial assessment by the U.S. Coast Guard found there was a body inside the truck.
New York State Police divers with an air boat arrived around 1 p.m. and pulled the body out of the truck. The troopers also helped recover the vehicle.
The ice was 4 to 6 inches thick, said Sgt. Ben Timerman, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. He said Hubbard was not ice fishing, but the investigation is continuing.
