Syracuse, N.Y. -- A man riding an electric bike in Syracuse died early Monday morning after a Syracuse police officer’s patrol car hit him, police said.

Around 12:55 a.m., a Syracuse police officer was patrolling the area of Bear Street W. and Liberty Street when he made a turn onto Liberty Street and collided with a Veo electric bike, said Lt. Matthew Malinowski, a Syracuse police spokesperson.

Malinowski said the officer gave first aid to the man riding the bike and an ambulance was called to the scene. The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, the spokesperson said.

The Syracuse Police Department’s Traffic Section is investigating the crash, Malinowski said.

Neither the officer nor bicyclist have been identified.

The state’s Attorney General’s Office was notified of the death, as required by state law. The office reviews all fatal incidents involving state and local police.

The officer involved in the crash has been placed on paid administrative leave, Malinowski said.

Veo is a micro mobility service that provides e-scooters and electric bikes as a form of transportation in the city. Riders can download an app to access them and pay for rides.
