Niagara Falls, N.Y. — Doubting that Upstate New York is the place to catch the 2024 total solar eclipse? Here’s your proof:
NASA is coming to Niagara Falls for the stellar, once-in-a-lifetime event.
A total solar eclipse will appear over North America — including the Empire State — on April 8, 2024. The moon will come between the sun and Earth, cloaking the sun and leading the midday sky to appear as dark as dusk.
For the first time in nearly 100 years, Upstate will be in the path of totality. And NASA’s Kennedy Space Center will spend four days in Western New York celebrating the surreal, celestial event with science and watch the otherworldly, 4-minute main event.

Astronauts, scientists and eclipse experts will head to Niagara Falls on April 4 for eclipse “programming and exhibits” throughout Niagara Falls, including at public libraries, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center and at the Aquarium of Niagara. When the day of the total solar eclipse arrives, NASA will watch from Niagara Falls State Park — a “prime viewing area” that the state boasts offers unobstructed views, if the weather cooperates.
“Niagara Falls is a spectacular natural backdrop for this once-in-a-lifetime event, and working with NASA to provide the programming and education leading up to the eclipse is sure to attract thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to the city,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said. “We are excited to be working with so many of our tourism partners to bring an electric energy throughout the area for this celestial wonder.”
While the exact events are still being planned, all programs will be free and open to the public. Details about the events will be released on Destination Niagara USA’s website.
