Syracuse, N.Y. — A pregnant woman shot outside the Syracuse Rescue Mission shelter died Wednesday, police said.

Apreona Harris, 26, was declared brain dead Monday and remained on life support until her organs could be collected for donation, said Lt. Matthew Malinowski, a Syracuse police spokesperson.

Her baby was delivered and is doing well, prosecutors said.

Police said off-duty detectives working a detail at the Rescue Mission campus saw David L. Kirby shoot Harris Friday morning in the 100 block of Dickerson Street.

Kirby, 34, was originally arraigned on attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon charges. Police said upgraded charges are pending.

Kirby is believed to be the father of the child, but a DNA test still needs to determine if he is the biological father, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.
