Section III girls basketball rankings (Week 7): Class C gets shakeup after state-ranked squad upset

Weedsport climbed into this week's girls basketball rankings after defeating state-ranked Tully last week.

Syracuse, N.Y. — The biggest changes in this week’s Section III girls basketball rankings came in Class C.

Weedsport climbed into the rankings in the No. 4 spot in Class C after upsetting state-ranked No. 16 Tully last week. The loss didn’t drop the Black Knights out of the rankings, but it pushed them down two spots.

All six No. 1 teams from last week held on to their positions atop their respective classes.

We’ve asked area media professionals who cover high school sports to participate in a weekly girls basketball poll. We reward five points for a first-place vote, four points for a second-place vote, etc. The girls basketball polls will be published on Mondays from now until the end of the season.

Comments

Kenny Lacy Jr.: Not a significant amount of movement in the rankings for me this week. All of my No. 1s from last week remain the same this week. I still have my eye on Class B, though. Little Falls sits at the top of the class with its undefeated record, but the rest of the class is not far behind and all have impressive resumés to claim the spot if Little Falls slips up down the stretch.

James McClendon: We are well into the second half of the regular season and it’s looking like the top teams from each class are firmly cemented in their positions. There are a few potential challengers who may have something to say about that over the next few weeks, but it will take some luck to knock any No. 1s off their thrones this late into the season.

Pat Spadafore: There remain two undefeated teams in Section III: Little Falls (12-0) and West Canada Valley (12-0). Which could fall first? My guess is Little Falls. The Mounties have a tough schedule this week, having to face Herkimer twice. Don’t let the Magicians’ 5-7 record fool you. Their only big blowout loss was to West Canada Valley. More interesting is that Herkimer has won the last three meetings between the teams. The first game is Monday at Herkimer, and the teams will hook up on Saturday in Little Falls. Sandwiched in between for the Mounties is a game at Canastota on Wednesday.
