Syracuse, N.Y. -- Upstate New York saw hurricane-force winds over the past 24 hours as a powerful storm struck the region, knocking out power to tens of thousands of people.
The damage was greatest in Western New York and the North Country, where falling trees and branches downed wires, cutting out power and blocking roads. The village of Dexter, in Jefferson County, posted the highest wind speed, 79 mph. A gust of 74 mph was recorded in the Chautauqua County city of Dunkirk.
