Will National Grid’s new smart meters change how we use energy? We’re about to find out: Central New York customers are first in line for new “smart meters” that National Grid is rolling out across its Upstate territory to all 1.7 million customers. National Grid will use the advanced meters to cut labor costs and address outages more quickly. The utility promises there will be big benefits on the other side of the meter, too: Armed with better information about their energy usage, consumers will get more efficient. But the greater household efficiency from smart meters will depend in part on programs that have yet to be rolled out, plus how customers respond and what incentives they have to cut back their usage, especially during periods of high demand when costs are the highest.

Foreigner “farewell” tour continues into 2024: Retirement is no longer “Urgent” for Foreigner, which is good news for fans who still feel like it’s the first time they heard the classic rock band. Styx and Foreigner announced their 2024 Renegades & Juke Box Heroes tour dates, which includes a stop in Upstate New York. The concert comes less than a year after Foreigner’s “historic farewell tour” came to Syracuse and other Upstate NY cities.

Virginia rides its offense as much as its vaunted defense in win over Syracuse: The Virginia Cavaliers are known for their defense. Under coach Tony Bennett, the Cavaliers regularly rank among the top defensive teams in the nation. And while Virginia’s defense made life difficult for Syracuse on Saturday, it was the Cavaliers’ offense that made the difference in an 84-62 win at the John Paul Jones Arena.
