Making Christmas merry for many: Volunteer Brian Russell of Camillus helps shoppers pick gifts at the annual Christmas Bureau distribution day on Wednesday at the Oncenter. The bureau, a joint campaign by the Salvation Army and the United Way of Central New York, gave toys, books, games, food and gift cards to more than 2,000 low-income families from Onondaga County who registered for the event. Mom-and-pop grocery stores where you can skip the supermarket struggle: Most of us shop at the big stores, simply out of convenience. Shopping for holiday meals, though, is stressful enough as it is. Fighting for a spot in a mall-size parking lot and shuffling shoulder-to-shoulder through 20-plus aisles to gather a few ingredients before waiting in a line 10 deep to check out can zap you of any holiday spirit you walked in with. Central New Yorkers are blessed with other options, however. Here are nine local mom-and-pop stores you should consider while putting together your menus for Christmas or New Year’s Eve.

Each month, we share the latest in rap, rock, folk, R&B, country, pop, alternative, EDM, jazz, blues and more in Central New York so you can discover bands, singers and rappers that you like and follow them. Here’s a look back at the 100-plus songs we featured this year.

Onondaga County finally gets its second legal marijuana shop: Lighting up for the holidays is taking on a whole new meaning this week for T.J. Lewis. Lewis on Friday expects to open his shop, TJ’s Cannabis Co. He’ll become just the second legal, state-licensed recreational marijuana retailer in Onondaga County. Where does Syracuse football’s recruiting class rank after National Signing Day? New Syracuse football coach Fran Brown looks like he’s going to be a tough man to satisfy. After bringing in a recruiting class that ranks as the best that SU has brought in during the modern-era of recruiting rankings, Brown praised the effort of his staff. Then he noted that recruiting is “not exactly where we want to be.” Brown might not be satisfied, but most long-time observers of Syracuse football are probably thrilled.
