Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse lawyer Mitchell Katz was appointed this month to fill a vacancy for a federal magistrate judge position.

Katz will replace retiring Chief Magistrate Judge Andrew Baxter in January, according to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. Baxter was appointed in 2009.
