Lawrence “Larry” Twomey, of Liverpool, passed away on January 9 at the age of 86.
According to his obituary, he was born in New York City on March 31, 1937.
He graduated from Syracuse University in 1959 after lettering all four years as a member of the varsity track and cross-country teams.
Twomey then began his career as a lifelong educator, first in the Syracuse City School District and then in Liverpool, where he served as a teacher and administrator until his retirement.
He continued substitute teaching until he was 80 years old and was an adjunct instructor at Onondaga Community College for 20 years.
“He could not go anywhere without bumping into a former student and would often hear about the impression he made on them,” his obituary said.
Twomey also served in the U.S. Air Force in France during the Berlin Crisis of 1961.
He was an avid SU sports fan, loved to watch the Kentucky Derby and baseball, and playing cards. He liked history and current events, traveling, and a good joke.
“Larry could talk to anyone and will be remembered for his contagious smile, his storytelling and his love of family,” his obituary added.
Twomey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marina, his two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Donald Hammack, of Oviedo, FL, and Lisa and Erick Holm, of West Granby, CT, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his son, Kevin, and brother, Raymond.
A calling hour will be held on Saturday, February 3 from 10 a.m. to 11 at Christ the King Church, 21 Cherry Tree Circle, Liverpool, NY 13090, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11.
The Rite of Committal and burial will take place in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at a future time and date to be announced.
