Syracuse, N.Y. — An ambitious $100 million plan to turn a former Syracuse convent and college campus into low-income senior housing has become a race to save the historic site from vandals and thieves.

Hoodlums have ripped out light fixtures, doors, banisters, stained glass windows, parts of a church organ, and copper piping and wiring. They’ve smashed countless windows at the North Side site, formerly home to the Sisters of St. Francis convent and later Maria Regina College.
