Only one team will walk away with a perfect 15-0 record for the season, and both escaped nail-biters in the semifinals. Washington beat No. 3 Texas 37-31 in a game that was dead even, 21-21 at halftime. But the Huskies held Texas scoreless through the third period, while adding 10 points to the board, and Texas couldn’t bounce back, despite outscoring the Huskies 10-6 in the final quarter. Michael Penix Jr. connected for 430 yards in the air and two touchdowns to win the Sugar Bowl.
At the Rose Bowl, the Wolverines beat No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide 27-20 after the game went to overtime with the score tied 20-20. Michigan nearly found itself upset in the fourth quarter when the Tide led 20-13, but J.J. McCarthy connected with Roman Wilson for a touchdown in the final two minutes of regular time. Blake Corum sealed the deal for the Wolverines with a 17-yard run during overtime.
The last time these teams met was on Sept. 11, 2021, when the Wolverines won 31-10.
