Hollywood is still obsessed with remakes, sequels and reboots, so it was only a matter of time before a classic kids’ movie set in Syracuse got the similar treatment.
“Snow Day,” the 2000 comedy film starring Chevy Chase as a Syracuse TV weatherman, has been reimagined as a a musical, also titled “Snow Day.” Nickelodeon and Paramount+ released the trailer for the new film Wednesday, and announced the film will premiere next month on both platforms.
Like the original film, the new “Snow Day” follows a group of kids determined to keep their school closed for a snow day:
Siblings Hal (”Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door” actor Ky Baldwin) and Natalie Brandston (”WandaVision” actress Michaela Russell) discover that anything is possible on a snow day when a surprise winter whiteout offers them the chance to break routines and take giant risks. Inspired to pursue his crush, Claire (Shelby Simmons, “Bunk’d”), Hal enlists the help of his best friend, Lane (Fabi Aguirre, Broadway’s “Les Misérables”), to help him express his feelings, and Natalie decides she must challenge the town’s cranky snowplow man if she wants to pull off the task of creating a second snow day.
Jerry Trainor, best known for playing Spencer Shay on “iCarly,” replaces Chris Elliott in the role of the Snowplowman who is determined to clear the roads and keep schools open. The cast also includes Laura Bell Bundy, Rob Huebel, Logan Aultman, Dominic Mariche, Myles Erlick, Monique Jasmine Paul, Destiny Rettinger, Lilly Bartlam and Viggo Hanvelt.
Paramount has not said if Chase, Elliott or any other original cast members — including Mark Webber, Jean Smart, Josh Peck, Pam Grier, John Schneider, and Emmanuelle Chriqui — will have roles. Musicians Iggy Pop and TLC’s Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas also made appearances.
“Snow Day,” released in February 2000, was a box office success, earning $60 million on a reported $13 million budget. Though it was set in Syracuse and resembled Central New York, scenes were primarily shot in Alberta, Canada.
It’s unclear if the new “Snow Day” musical will also be set in Syracuse, but several images in the trailer make it clear that it also wasn’t filmed in Central New York.
“Snow Day” (2022), directed by Michael Lembeck (”The J Team,” “The Santa Clause 2″ and “The Santa Clause 3,”) and written by Will McRobb, Chris Vescardi and Samantha Martin, features original music penned by the trio who previously worked on “The Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder” and “Henry Danger: The Musical.”
“Snow Day” will be available to stream beginning Friday, Dec. 16 on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada and premiere on Nickelodeon that same day at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
